Ecological Consultant and on-ground restoration contractor specialising in Australian high altitude ecosystems

Elizabeth (Liz) MacPhee
Principal

I have a Masters and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Horticulture. My masters focused on the germination ecology of Australian alpine shrubs. I have worked across the Australian Alps for over twenty-five years. I have a lifelong commitment to repair degraded ecosystems in the Alps, but also aim to assist individuals and organisations to understand the ecological limitations and capacities of any landscape so that it can be managed sustainably. I aim to successfully revegetate any site or garden using native plants and non-weedy exotic plants to provide the information and guidance to improve the aesthetic, habitat provision, carbon fixing and biodiversity of any site for the long term in a changing climate.

My professional achievements include:
  • Writing the Australian Alps Rehabilitation Field Guide and conducting training workshops for land managers from ACT, NSW and Victorian government and non-government agencies on how to use it

  • Production of high altitude grass seed at low altitude for use in rehabilitation

  • The rehabilitation and transformation of large-scale former Snowy-hydro Scheme construction sites

  • The successful establishment of over 1 million plants in rehabilitation sites across Kosciuszko National Park (KNP)

  • Developing innovative techniques for growing native plants in highly degraded areas of KNP including the use of decomposed sawdust to create compost as a plant growth medium

  • Creation of habitat for threatened species, Mountain Pygmy-possum and Southern Corrobboree Frog in Kosciuszko National Park

  • The establishment of the Vic Alps nursery that continues to provide native plants to resorts and parks agencies for rehabilitation

  • Awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2006 to look at high altitude rehabilitation techniques, including mossbeds, ski resorts, rangelands and coal mines in Finland, France, USA, Chile and Argentina

  • The compilation of plant lists with species suited to climate change conditions, in addition to gardening advice that ensures the maximum use and retention of carbon and nutrients or sustainable and attractive gardens

  • Rehabilitation advice for Victorian ski resorts using native species

  • Post fire and grazing damage rehabilitation after the 2003 fires

  • Project management of the rehabilitation of Mt Feathertop walking track

  • Native garden design, advice and planting recommendations that ensure maximum use and retention of carbon and nutrients for sustainable and attractive gardens.
